Dorian Godon won Saturday’s shortened seventh and penultimate stage of the Paris-Nice today, with Jonas Vingegaard poised for the overall victory with a commanding 3min 22sec advantage over Dani Martinez.

The seventh stage was supposed to be the Queen stage but there was too much snow at the 1600m summit, forcing race officials to curtail the route.

Lashing rain on the Promenade des Anglais this morning meant organizers cut off the opening sector as well.

So the peloton breezed through just 47 kilometers albeit wrapped up in foul weather gear in the Nice region usually known for clement conditions this time of year.

In the end, Ineos’ Godon won the sprint finish ahead of Biniam Girmay and Cees Bol after only an hour of racing, securing France’s first victory in this 84th edition of the “Race to the Sun”.

Earlier, Visma-Lease a Bike’s Victor Campenaerts, Bruno Armirail, Edoardo Affini and Wilco Kelderman set a fast pace at the drop of the flag, while Axel Zingle followed Vingegaard’s wheel.

After a dozen kilometers of racing, Tim Marsman (Alpecin-Premier Tech) decided to set-off from the peloton.

From there, the Dutchman stayed out front until the final 10 kilometers.

Nicolya Vinokurov (XDS Astana) was next to attack with 7 kilometers remaining, but he too was rapidly reeled in as the peloton was getting poised for a bunch sprint in Isola.

A couple of crashes disrupted the finale, but not the Ineos Grenadiers train, with Godon taking off inside the last 200 meters to power his way to his first victory with the British team.
