Matteo Trentin (Etixx-Quick Step) claimed this year’s Pars – Tours today, after holding off a challenge from Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto-Soudal) to win his first Paris-Tours title.
Trentin attacked during the final 10 kilometers, leaving just him and the trio of Van de Sande and Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff-Saxo) out front to decide the race.
However, Van Avermaet hopes were dashed after suffering an untimely puncture during the closely 1500, leaving Trentin and Van de Sande to battle it out – after Brutt had been dropped.
Race Highlights
Despite a series of attacks that animated today’s 231 kilometer race, isn’t wasn’t until the final 10 kilometers that Trentin, along with Van der Sande, Van Avermaet and Brutt, managed to finally get away during the penultimate climb.
Pavel Brut (Tinkoff Saxo) was later dropped during the final short ascent – leaving the remaining trio out front to battle it out.
With Van Avermaet out of the way with a puncture, Trentin and Van der Sande decided to begin their sprint with 800 meters still left to go.
From there, Trentin continued his surge for the line, leaving the Tinkoff-Saxo rider unable to match his turn of the pedals – to claim his fourth victory of the season.
“I’m really happy. After the World Championships I stayed focused and trained at home. I lived the life of a rider for the last few races of the season,” Trentin said at the finish.
“This is my fifth race win in France out of seven wins so I always win in France.”
