Strava Offers New Personalized “Instant Workouts” and GPS Routes

Strava has announced the global launch of Instant Workouts to all subscribers. Instant Workouts, which can be found in the carousel at the top of the feed, is a feature that analyzes prior activity data and provides recommendations on what to do next, such as workout suggestions.

For instance, using an athlete’s recent activity history, Instant Workouts generates personalized workouts across four intents (‘Maintain’, ‘Build’, ‘Explore’, or ‘Recover’) and 40+ different sport types, designed to help an athlete achieve their goal for the week. With the feature having launched to a subset of Strava users in November, Running and Weight Training have stood out as some of the most popular recommendations, and overall 85% of feedback on the recommendations has been positive.

“Instant Workouts is intended to provide inspiration for athletes to stay consistent, especially for those who are looking to build an exercise habit or get back into things after a break. For users who have a regular workout routine, Instant Workouts can bring variety and fresh ideas to keep movement fun. And, since the suggestions are based upon prior activity, the more users upload, the more personalized the recommendations become,” says Strava.

In addition to personalized recommendations, notable elements of Instant Workouts include:

  • Route Generation: For GPS workouts that require a route, Instant Workouts will generate a route customized to the recommended activity, beginning right from where the user is when they open the app. These routes are powered by Strava’s Heatmap, made up of billions of activities where the community has actually gone on runs, rides, and more.
  • Recommendation Context: Instant Workouts includes the ability to tell users why we’re recommending a workout. For each recommendation, the feature gives a rationale of the benefits to that type of workout, helping users learn a bit more about certain types of workouts and how that fits into their own activity history.
  • Workouts from the experts: For some users, weekly recommendations may include workouts from trusted partners such as Runna.

Instant Workouts will continue to evolve in the coming weeks and months, with the ability to send workouts to your Garmin or Apple device and improved step-by-step guidance.
