Josh Tarling claimed today’s 12.2km time trial in stage 2 of the UAE Tour to snatch the overall lead in the seven-day race, while the man to beat Tadej Pogacar came third on the day 18 seconds adrift.

The 21-year-old Ineos rider, who came fourth in the Paris Olympics time trial despite a nasty fall, completed the course at an average speed of over 56km/h today, finishng 13-seconds ahead of Steffan Bissegger and 18-seconds ahead of Tour de France and Giro d’Italia champion Pogacar to take the overall leader’s red jersey from Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan.

Meanwhile, race leader and stage 1 winner Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) was the last man home. The Italian finished 49th at the finish line, 1:13 down, to hand over the red jersey to Tarling. nathan Milan was one of the riders who set off late and was adversely affected by high winds that picked up near the close of racing.

Tomorrow, riders will face a 181km stage through the desert from the UAE’s most northern city Ras al Khaimah to a hilltop finish at Jebel Jais mountain, which will feature a 20km climb with gradients that will kick up to 7% in the last 2km, with all eyes will be on third-placed Pogacar, who trails Tarling in the overall by 18 seconds.
