Amaël Moinard won the second and final stage of this year’s Tour du Haut Var today – beating Carlos Betancur in a sprint finish. However, his second place finish was enough for Colombian rider to hold onto his lead and claim the overall victory in this year’s race.
How the Race Unfolded
Today’s race saw a breakaway group containing Thor Hushovd, Johan Le Bon, Jérôme Cousin, Romain Hardy, Rudy Molard, Florian Vachon and Floris Smeyers, get underway early on in the stage.
With 50 kilometers remaining, under the impetus of the Ag2r team, the peloton slowly started to reel in the escapees. At that point, Hushovd decided to ride clear on his own – subsequently holding off the pursuit until the final climb of the day (Côte de Tuilières) – before finally being caught.
Remy Di Gregorio and Fabio Duarte were the first two riders to go clear over the Côte de Tuilières. However, as the race came back together in the final kilometer, Betancur managed to make his way back into the bunch.
When Moinard attacked under the "red kite", Betancur was quick to move into position and grab the French rider’s wheel. From there, the two riders proceeded to open up a slight gap of 10 seconds over the peloton – with Moinard ultimately winning the sprint.
In the meantime, Emilien Viennet won the sprint for third place ahead of Cadel Evans and Armindo Fonseca.
Evans’ finish was enough to gain him 5th place in the overall GC – just behind Fonseca. Meanwhile, Moinard took third overall behind the two Ag2r riders – Betancur and Dumoulin.
