Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies’ Leah Kirchmann won stage 2 of this year’s Amgen Women’s Tour of California, finishing ahead of Lauren Komanski (Twenty 16) and Trixi Worrack (Velocio SRAM) in South Lake Tahoe today.

However, Komanski’s performance netted her enough time, to move up into the overall race lead ahead of Worrack.

Race Highlights

Today’s 49.6-mile stage, was animated by a number of breakaway attempts. However, no rider managed to ride clear, until midway in race, wherein Allie Dragoo (Twenty 16) succeeded in getting clear of the peloton.

But, the American rider no sooner grabbed the intermediate sprint points and bonus, that she was reeled back in by the chase.

From there, Katrin Hammes (Tibco) and Allison Jackson (Twenty 16) were the next two riders to escape, but just as their predecessors, the duo were quickly reabsorbed by the peloton.

The high-pace of the peloton ultimately whittled down the field to just around 30 riders, as the race tackled the final climb to Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Leah Kirchmann remained poised near the front, until final few hundred yards, where she powered her way clear of her rivals to seize the stage victory, and move up into fourth place.

Meanwhile, Lauren Komanski, finished in second, to takeover the lead in the general classification from Katie Hall, who dropped to third place.
