Fulcrum Introduces New Speed CMPTZN DB Wheelsets

Fulcrum has introduced two new disc brake specific wheelsets under the banner Speed CMPTZN DB, incorporating the Italian brand’s ceramic bearings and stylish new Black Label graphics

So what does CMPTZN mean?

According to Fulcrum it’s an abbreviation for Competition, relying on feedback from the pro peloton to come up with the moniker.

At the heart of the SPEED 40 and SPEED 55 CMPTZN DB wheelsets are Fulcrum’s Cult bearings, which they claim not only shave-off 10 grams compared to their other models, but also decrease rolling resistance up to 3.5 watts over traditional bearings as well.

Both wheelsets feature the brand’s full carbon rim with a “Twill“ finish and 2:1 spoke pattern, while the hubs are fitted with 21 spokes (14 to the driveside at the rear, and 14 to the non-driveside at the front), creating what Fulcrum describes as “the ability to minimize flex and combat energy loss”.

Additionally, both the SPEED 40 and SPEED 55 CMPTZN DB include 2-Way Fit technology, which means the wheels can be run either tubeless or with traditional clinch tires. Also, while both models have an internal width of 19mm, optimizing them for 25mm or 28mm tires, the wheels can accommodate anything from 23mm up to a whopping 50mm.

The SPEED 40 and SPEED 55 CMPTZN DB sell for the same price of $2,800, which come standard with either Shimano’s HG11 or Sram’s XDR freehub bodies, while Campagnolo’s N3W is available at an additional cost.

more from Fulcrum…

SPEED 40 CMPTZN DB

The new 40mm deep Speed CMPTZN DB wheels have been designed to provide the most exacting cyclists with the same levels of performance that Fulcrum reserves for World Tour athletes.

As soon as you set your eyes on them you can see why the Speed CMPTZN DB are different. The new models share the same Black Label graphics of the Racing Zero CMPTZN family.

The true challenge lay in trying to improve the superlative Fulcrum Speed 55 DB with which the Speed CMPTZN DB wheels share certain technical aspects, such as the full carbon rim with “Twill“ finish and the 2:1 spoke pattern. But this time we wanted to optimize a top of the range product, by improving its rolling resistance and lightness.

The obvious choice was our CULT bearings that allow us to save weight (10 grams less than the Speed 55 DB) and achieve unequalled levels of rolling resistance by up to nine times compared to traditional solutions, with a saving of up to 3.5 watts per pedal stroke.Along with the considerable improvement in terms of mechanical performance, the new hubs of the

Speed CMPTZN DB have also undergone a matte black restyling, to complement the black on black graphics of the rims.

The new model is available in the 2-WAY FIT version, which lets you choose whether to run them tubeless (for lower rolling resistance and greater puncture resistance) or with clinchers (for traditionalists).

The inner rim width of 19 mm gives you additional freedom in terms of the tires that can be fitted.

The Speed 55 CMPTZN DB is in fact the choice of Elia Viviani of Team Cofidis. As soon as you set your eyes on them you can see why the Speed CMPTZN DB are different. The new models share the same Black Label graphics of the Racing Zero CMPTZN family.
