Omar Fraile (Dimension Data) claimed stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia today, marking the Spanish rider’s first Grand Tour victory, after winning the final sprint in Bagno di Romagna.

Meanwhile, Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) retained his grip on the pink jersey, after finishing safely in the main peloton alongside other GC rivals.

Race Highlights

Fraile was part of a large breakaway group of 26 riders that came together at the summit of the first of today’s four climbs.

With 46 kilometers to go, Fraile decided to launch an attack, taking Team Sky’s Mikel Landa along with him.

From there, the duo went on to establish an advantage of more than two minutes over the peloton, before being reeled in at the base of the final climb with 40 kilometers remaining.

Landa was dropped immediately, while Fraile managed to hold on, with enough strength still intact to follow an attack by Pierre Rolland (Cannondale-Drapac) near the top of the climb.

The two riders were later joined by Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) and Tanel Kangert (Astana) along the descent to the finish, setting the stage for a four-man sprint, with Friale emerging victorious.

In the meantime, the peloton saw attacks from Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) along the final climb, neither of which were enough to distance the likes of Dumoulin or Nairo Quintana (Movistar), but did manage shed Thomas and Kruiswijk, both of whom lost time in their efforts to finish in the top 10.
