Virtually every helmet brand has long-since jumped on the aero bandwagon at this point, offering what they believe is the ultimate helmet to cheat the wind.
However, credit must be given to Giro for being one of the first proponents behind this movement, when they launched their Air Attack model back in 2012.
Over the years, Giro has taken what they’ve learned from the Air Attack and refined its attributes to become their latest aero lid – the Vanquish MIPS.
The Vanquish MIPS posses a curious shape, wherein the front of the helmet features a smooth, rounded profile that ultimately leads to boxy, angular tail-section, which Giro claims gives the helmet its aerodynamic properties.
Unlike a lot of aero helmets, Giro paid equal attention to ventilation with the Vanquish MIPS, providing almost double the amount of air channeling over the competition. In addition, four generous size indentations along the underside of the front section, help to provide even more channelled air around the area of brow-pad – as a means of keeping sweat off the rider’s face.
Just as its predecessor, the Vanquish MIPS incorporates an integrated shield, which conveniently attaches using a series of embedded magnets that allows it to be positioned either up or down. Moreover, the shield features Zeiss’ Vivid Optics tint, which is designed to filter out wavelengths of unwanted blue light that can impede vision.
In addition to MIPS technology, Giro beefed up the safety of the Vanquish MIPS by adding a dual-layer EPS foam liner, which comprises a softer-density foam next to the head, while harder, more durable foam is placed underneath the four-piece polycarbonate shell. According to Giro, this configuration results in better impact absorption across a range of different strike points than any single-density design.
Other features that punctuate the Vanquish MIPS are lightweight webbing and low-profile strap guides to keep things nicely tucked away, as well as eyewear grippers to help secure sunglasses that are stashed into the forward vents and antimicrobial padding.
The Vanquish MIPS is available in six colors and three sizes, with a retail price of $275, plus $25 for additional shield tints.
