Since its inception, Manitou has dedicated its efforts toward smoothing out the roughest terrain for the widest variety of applications. Indeed, the Science of Smooth has been the brand’s guiding principle since 1989.
So, in an effort to expand its range of products, Manitou has launched a limited edition fork called the MASTODON that’s aimed squarely at the FatBike segment.
According to Manitou, the MASTODON is not merely a trail fork that’s been modified or repurposed to suit the needs of larger tire requirements or frame geometries, but rather it’s a FatBike specific solution that was designed from the ground up.
“It is a meticulously engineered suspension fork made to offer a clear performance upgrade regardless of how low or high the numbers on the thermometer read. To create such a solution required all-environment and all-temperature performance testing that took the R+D staff to some of the most inhospitable testing environments in the world. To earn its place within the Manitou family, the MASTODON passed performance and reliability testing in both real world and lab scenarios at temperatures as low as -40 degrees,” boasts Manitou.
Thanks to Manitou’s Reverse Arch design, the MASTODON requires less material for maximum torsional stiffness, making for a lighter yet better performing structure. Its stiffness is further improved when combined with the company’s Hexlock SL thru axle.
All options are internally adjustable by the rider in 10mm increments with COMP being internally adjustable from 80mm to 140mm and the PRO models adjustable from 100mm to 140mm. This represents a huge advantage for retailers, who can now carry one single SKU instead of 5.
The ease at which the adjustment of travel is performed means that not only do riders have the ability to adjust the desired amount of travel, but they can do so without the assistance of a professional mechanic. Moreover, like all Pro level suspension, the MASTODON utilizes Manitou’s Dorado air spring technology in tandem with its MC2 compression damping, while its TPC rebound damping with IVA volume adjustment allows for fine tuning of the air spring, making for an unmatched customizable suspension that adapts to an extremely wide variety of conditions, riding styles and personal preferences.
Lastly, an additional element of versatility is derived from the MASTODON’s availability to accommodate either 26 or 27.5” wheels in standard or extended ride height versions. For instance, the extended ride height versions fit up to 26×5.15” / 27.5×4.5” tires, while the standard ride height fits up to 26×4” / 27.5×3.8” tires.
To further celebrate of the launch of the MASTODON, Manitou has created a special graphic for the PRO LE model that pays homage to its frigid weather application with a snow, camouflage paint scheme that’s paired with blaze orange decals.
Available in the extended ride height version only, the MASTODON PRO LE will be produced in a one time, 300-unit production run. No more will be produced, and once they’re are gone, they’re gone.
