Orbea Rolls-Out New OQUO Wheelsets

Orbea has rolled-out a new range of wheelsets under its OQUO brand, comprising no fewer than eight models that target both the gravel and road segments.

Orbeo first launched its OQUO brand with a range of mountain bike wheels last fall. But, the Spanish company has now turned its focus to the tarmac and gravel, offering wheelsets that can accommodate a wider choice of tires in order to accommodate both on and off-road exploits.

The range is broken down into two categories the Road Performance, which is focused on weight and aerodynamics, and the Road Control that’s aimed at gravel and endurance “with a focus on comfort while tackling rougher terrain”.

The Road Performance features an internal width of 21mm with a hooked rim design, allowing the wheels to accommodate tires ranging from 25mm to 35mm, while spinning on Sapim spokes and Zipp’s top-tier Cognition and ZR1 hubs.

“OQUO has worked on an optimized mini-hook design, that increases security and robustness, and helps the fit of the tyre to the rim maximising aerodynamics,” says Orbea. “For high-performance wheels such as the Road Performance and Road Control ranges, the mini hook system offers the best balance of tyre width compatibility, pressure range and tyre options. Allowing more tyre choice helps riders to set up their wheels to suit their riding and gives the possibility of a lower overall system weight.”

The Road Performance wheelsets are offered in the following three guises – across six models:

  • LTD is the top-of-the-range wheelset with carbon rims, Zipp’s top-line Cognition hubs, and Sapim’s CX-Ray spokes.
  • TEAM is the second-tier. It uses the same carbon rim as you’ll find on the Ltd wheels but matched with Zipp’s ZR1 hubs.
  • PRO is the entry-level. Again, you get Zipp’s ZR1 hubs but this time the rims are aluminum alloy.

In the case of the Road Control, both wheelsets feature a 25mm internal width and a mini-hooked rim design, expanding the range of tire fitment from 32mm to 50mm, while RC25 Team utilizes an alloy rim and the more premium RC 25 Pro is treated to carbon. However, both wheelsets are fitted with Sapim CX-Sprint spokes laced to Zipp ZR1 hubs.

Oddly, Orbea chose to use the nomenclature “25” when breaking down the Road Control wheelsets, when in fact the number actually refers to the internal rim width of both models.

Here’s how they breakdown:

RC25TEAM £1,299
