Filippo Ganna (Ineos) claimed today’s opening time trial in this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico to don the race’s first leader’s jersey, beating his fellow teammate by a staggering 22-seconds, while Max Walscheid (Lidl-Trek) grabbed the last spot on the podium a further 4-seconds back.
Meanwhile, former Tirreno winner Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) finished nine-seconds slower in seventh place, followed by Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who rounded out the top-10, 36 seconds down on Ganna.
Earlier, Jan Tratnik (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) set the day’s first viable benchmark, stopping the clock at 13-minutes even. However, Tratnik was eventually dethroned from the hot-seat by the South African National Time Trial Champion, Alan Hatherly (Jayco-AlUla), beating his Slovenian rival by 2-seconds.
From there, Hatherly was bested by Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers), who stopped the clock with a time that was 4-seconds faster. But, the American rider’s performance was quickly surpassed by Walscheid, who crossed the line just a few hundredths of a second faster.
