Isaac Del Toro secured the overall victory in the UAE Tour in Abu Dhabi today, while Jonathan Milan took the final stage win, his third sprint victory of the week. However, it was the performance of the 22-year-old Mexican rider that made the impact.
After winning two stages in this years’s UAE Tour, Del Toro’s triumphs culminated into a 20-second advantage over Antonio Tiberi to claim the race honors, while Luke Plapp took the final spot on the podium almost a minute further back.
Meanwhile, Milan won today’s sprint finale at the end of a 147km route, which began and ended in Abu Dhabi, ahead of Erden Blikra and Sam Welsford.
Elsewhere, Remco Evenepoel had a considerably less happy week, who began the UAE Tour as a favorite to win the Emirati race. But, the Belgian rider struggled on the climbs of Jebel Mobrah on Thursday and Jebel Hafeet on Saturday, finished a paltry 10th place overall.
Earlier, the final 150-kilometer stage saw an initial five-rider breakaway group escape the peloton. However, the escapees were kept on a short leash, who were eventually reined in during the final two kilometers.
From there, the race began shaping up into an inevitable sprint showdown, with Milan once again proving unbeatable, timing his final move with a fierce acceleration during the closing meters to hold-off Blikra and Welsford.
