Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) stamped his authority on stage 5 of the Volta a Cataluyna, claiming a solo victory atop the Col de Pall today, after the Danish rider dropped all of his rivals with just over 6 kilometers to go until the summit.
Meanwhile, Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) rode clear of a four-man chase group to finish second on the stage, 50 seconds down on Vingegaard, but 10 seconds clear of Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-QuickStep).
Elsewhere, the big loser of the day was Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), who was distanced by Vingegaard et al, finishing a disappointing 6th place at 1:38 back, after being dropped earlier on the slopes. The same for Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5), who was jettisoned at the base of the final climb, while João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) lost almost two minutes as well.
However, the greatest disappointment was for the Ineos Grenadiers, after the British squad was forced to surrender the leader’s jersey from the shoulders of Dorian Godon, while both Oscar Onley and Carlos Rodriguez finished well over two minutes down on the winner.
Today’s victory moved Vingegaard into the overall lead of the race with a 57-second lead over Gall, with Martinez third at 1:09, Lipowitz fourth at 1:13 and Paret-Peintre fifth at 1:15.
