Jonas Vingegaard secured overall victory in this year’s Volta a Catalunya, after finishing safely in the peloton in Queralt today.
The Danish rider topped the general classification ahead of Lenny Martinez and Florian Lipowitz after taking control of the race with back-to-back solo wins in the Pyrenees.
Meanwhile, Brady Gilmore sprinted to victory in the final stage, edging out Dorian Godon and Remco Evenepoel in a tight finish.
Earlier, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Einer Rubio (Movistar), Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility), Liam Slock (Lotto-Intermarché) and Darren Rafferty (EF Education-Easy Post) formed the day’s first breakaway effort, who subsequently built up a modest advantage of around two minutes over the peloton.
However, the quintet was eventually reined in with 35 kilometers to go, prompting Evenepoel to make a bold move that dragged Vingegaard, Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers), Lenny Martínez (Bahrain Victorious), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-QuickStep) and teammate Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) along with him.
From there, Evenepoel continued to up the pace repeatedly, as did Vingegaard and Lipowitz from time to time.
At one point, as many as 20 riders amassed at the front, with Tobias Svarre (Uno-X Mobility) attacking with 18 kilometers to go, but the young Neo-pro was quickly reeled in.
Next came an attack from Guilio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) on the climb of the Montjuic, but the Italian rider was quickly joined by Evenepoel, Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Vingegaard, Onley and Ben O’Connor (Jayco-AIUla).
Still, Evenepoel made one last effort during the final lap, but to no avail, as the field quickly came back together again for a sprint finale, with the Australian rider emerging victorious.
