Zipp has introduced an updated version of its popular 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset, which they claim is considerably lighter and faster than the previous model.
The new 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset is the first to feature Zipp’s TSE (Total System Efficiency) Technology, capitalizing on reduced wind and rolling resistance, as well as less weight and vibration, to achieve greater speed.
“Our 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset is designed for the real world… a world of imperfect conditions, road surfaces, and elements where the bottom line is simple. Efficiency = speed. It’s faster, lighter, and more capable over varied terrain—whether the surface is pavement in all its conditions or no pavement at all,” claims Zipp.
To further bolster aerodynamic efficiency, the rim profile has been slightly increased to a 25mm internal width and a 30mm external width, along with a shallower 40mm depth, optimizing the 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset for 28mm tires.
“The profile provides low drag and an improved transition between rim and tire, boosting aero efficiency on the road. The wide rim stance also features less tire deflection for reduced rolling resistance. The combination of the wider tire, increased tyre volume, and lower tire pressure helps to reduce rider fatigue by smoothing out the ride over imperfect pavement and road conditions – the tire and wheel system absorbs the shaking, not the rider,” explains Zipp.
Additionally, the hookless rim bed has been designed to make it easier to inflate tubeless tires without resorting to an air compressor, allowing for a maximum tire pressure of 72.5psi.
The new 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset also features Zipp’s new German-engineered ZR1 DB hub, which comprises a 6-pawl leaf spring design (two groups of three pawls), a ratchet ring with 33 teeth and 66 points of engagement that are compatible with either Shimano/SRAM or XDR driver bodies.
The wheelset also gets center-lock rotors and lockrings with 12mm front and rear end caps, as well as new graphics.
The 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake wheelset sells for $2,200, which comes with Zipp’s new lifetime warranty.
