Zipp has revised its long-standing Super-9 wheel with a new hookless, tubeless-ready rim design, which has resulted in not only less weight, but the ability to run wider tires at lower pressures, a trend that has increasingly taken over both the road and gravel segments.
Aptly dubbed the Super-9 Disc, the wheel is a claimed 13% lighter than its predecessor, while the internal rim width has been increased by a staggering 33%, along with Zipp’s Total System Efficiency (TSE) technology, resulting in a stiffer carbon laminate and a more robust rim bead interface.
“Experiencing Zipp’s dual innovations of hookless and TSE, riders on the Super-9 realize a disc wheel does not have to feel rigid to be fast… So, beyond speed gains, riders will experience better handling and cornering on course in a disc significantly stiffer and more durable than its predecessor,” boasts Zipp.
Elsewhere, the Super-9 Disc features Zipp’s Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) Sawtooth-patterned aero dimples for maximum airflow, along with a new rim shape that uniformly tapers down 30.4mm at the rim, while things spin on the brand’s ZR1 SL hub and ceramic bearings.
Additionally, the wheel now has a revised valve with a built-in TyreWiz 2.0 tire-pressure monitor that is nicely concealed behind a drive-side cover.
“The Super-9 is fastest with 28mm tubeless tires inflated to lower than traditional pressure. So, beyond speed gains, you’ll experience better handling and cornering on course in a disc significantly stiffer and more durable disc than its predecessor. Optimal tire pressure is crucial to maximizing speed on the bike. To ensure proper inflation, the Super-9 comes with the TyreWiz 2.0 tire-pressure monitor integrated out of sight and perfectly balanced so you’ll always know if you’re in your desired PSI/bar range. Inflation is a breeze with redesigned pump access. Moreover, the disc features a redesigned pump-access port—no stickers needed. The Super-9 features the premium ZR1 hub with ceramic bearings and 66 points of engagement,” adds Zipp.
All in Zipp, says the Super-9 Disc tips the scales at around 1050 grams, which sells for $3,000.
