Richie Porte (BMC) claimed stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné today, after clocking the fastest time along the 23.5 kilometer time trial stage from La Tour-du-Pin to Bourgoin-Jallieu – beating world champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) by 12 seconds.

Porte was two seconds down on Martin at mid-point in the stage, however, the Australian rider found the reserves needed to make up lost ground during the second half of the course to set the fastest time of 28:07.

As result of his performance, Porte moved up into second place in the overall classification, 27 seconds behind Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), who finished well-enough in today’s the trial event to retain his yellow jersey for another day – after placing ninth on the stage.

Meanwhile, race favorite Chris Froome (Sky) finished in eighth place, conceding conceding 37 seconds to Porte, while other GC hopeful Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) fared slightly better, finishing 35 seconds down in 7th place.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) continued his fine run of 2017 form, placing third on the stage, 24 seconds down on Porte.

Valverde now lies third overall, 51 seconds behind De Gendt, while Contador and Froome lie 5th at 1:02 and 6th at 1:04, respectively.
