2014 Giro d'Italia Stage 1

Orica GreenEdge swept the opening team time trial event at the start of this year’s Giro d’Italia today, with the fastest time of 24:42 – along today’s 21.7 kilometer route in Belfast.

Svein Tuft was the first team member to cross the finish line, thus claiming the maglia rosa to celebrate his 37th birthday.

Meanwhile, Omega Pharma QuickStep finished second at 5 seconds down from the Australian team, followed by Cadel Evans and his BMC team in third a further 7 seconds behind.

Fortunately, the Garmin-Sharp team was beset by tragedy, when it’s race favorite and hometown hero, Daniel Martin, crashed during today’s race – subsequently incurring a suspected broken collar bone.
