2014 Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey Stage 5

Elia Viviani won stage 5 of this year’s Tour of Turkey, after beating the unstoppable Mark Cavendish in a bunch sprint finish in Turgutreis today.

The Italian rider successfully made his way up through the ranks of the peloton to grab Cavendish’s wheel. And, from there, managed to nix the "Manxman" on the line by a mere bike’s length or so.

Viviani’s triumph today put and end to Cavendish’s winning streak in the "sprints", as the British rider had so far racked up three stage wins in this year’s Tour.

Meanwhile, Rein Taaramäe held onto the overall race lead, with a six second advantage over Adam Yates.

Earlier Race Highlights

A nine man breakaway group got underway early in today’s stage. And, for the most part, the escapees worked in unison together to build up a modest lead over the peloton. However, unrest came to bear upon the breakaway group, when Nicola Boem decided to go on the attack. As result, the Italian rider succeeded in jettisoning most of his breakaway companions, but only for a brief period.

As the peloton drew closer, attacks from within the chase group started to occur, with Adam Hansen being the first rider to go on the hunt.

However, as the race entered into the final 5 kilometers, everything came back together, with teams ushering their respective sprinters to the front for what came down to a sprint finale.
