Elia Viviani racked up another victory in this year’s Tour of Turkey, after beating Mark Cavendish in a hotly contested sprint finish in Izmir today – to claim stage 7.
Cavendish once again profited from his teammate, Alessandro Petacchi, who faithfully delivered the ‘Manxman" into perfect position to contest the sprint. However, an equally determined Viviani was right there in his strip stream, to power past the British rider in the closing 100 meters to seize the win. In addition, Andrea Guardini capitalized on his fellow Italian’s momentum, to pass Cavendish as well – to claim second place.
Despite a last minute crash that scattered the peloton in sight of the finish, Adam Yates managed to avoid the confusion and cross the line safely to retain his overall lead.
The British rider continues to lead Rein Taaramae by just one second, with Romain Hardy in third at 39 seconds back.
The Tour of Turkey ends tomorrow with a 121 kilometer stage in and around the capital in Istanbul.
