2014 Tirreno-Adriatico Stage 7

Alberto Contador won this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico in convincing fashion, following the 7th and last stage in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy today.

The final 9.1-kilometer individual time trial stage was all but a formality for Contador to seal the blue leader’s jersey,  as he began today’s stage with a 2:08 lead over over his closest rival Nairo Quintana.

However, Quintana put in an impressive performance in today’s ITT, wherein the Colombian rider beat Contador’s time – to slightly close the gap with a final deficit of 2:05 down from the Spanish rider in the overall classification. Meanwhile,  Roman Kreuziger rounded out the podium in third spot at 2:14.

Today’s victory marked Contador’s first stage race win since the Vuelta a Espana in 2012.

The final ITT stage went to Adriano Malori, who demonstrated that he was capable of beating big name time trial experts like Fabian Cancellara, Bradley Wiggins and current World Champion Tony Martin.

Cancellara finished six seconds back from Malori, while Wiggins finished third at 11 seconds back. The British Time Trial Champion Alex Dowsett placed sixth, at 20 seconds back.
