Michael Matthews won stage 3 of the 2014 Vuelta al País Vasco y in Vitoria-Gastiez, Spain today. The Australian rider profited from a strong lead out by his teammate Simon Gerrans during an the uphill sprint – after 194 kilometers of racing that began in Urdazubi.
Meanwhile, Kevin Reza finished second, with Michal Kwiatkowski again finishing in third place.
Alberto Contador managed to finish safety within the peloton to retain his overall lead with three stages remaining. The Spanish rider leads his fellow countryman Alejandro Valverde by 14 seconds.
The Vuelta al País Vasco continues tomorrow with a 151 kilometer stage from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Arrate (Eibar), which features a total of five 1st and 2nd category climbs, including the challenging Alto de Usartza just 2 kilometers from the finish.
