Eddy Merckx Undergoes Heart Surgery

Following last week’s news, that cycling legend Eddy Merckx, was hospitalized after collapsing at this home, the 69 year-old is reported to have undergone heart surgery over the weekend.

Merckx had a pacemaker fitted last year to correct an irregular heartbeat, and described it as a “minor procedure” aimed at preventing the development of a combination of cardiac arrhythmias and blood clots.” He added that he hoped to return home soon.

According to the Belgian newspaper, Sporza, Merckx is said to have ridden his bike for 70km on Saturday and 80km on Sunday, to include taking part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, prior to collapsing at his home.

Merckx reportedly underwent surgery at the UZ Jette hospital in the northwest outskirts of Brussels. He was treated by Pedro Brugada, the surgeon who looked after former Tour of Flanders winner Nick Nuyens (Garmin-Sharp) and former cyclocross world champion Niels Albert.
