Giro Rosa 2014 Stage 7

Marianne Vos claimed stage 7 of this year’s Giro Rosa today, beating Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) and Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) by several bike lengths in today’s summit finish in Chiavenna, Italy.

Race Highlights

Today’s 91.8 kilometer stage took the peloton to Lombardia, after a long transfer from San Fior last night.

The greatest challenge in today’s stage, occurred almost immediately after the start, wherein riders faced a 5.4 kilometer, category 2 climb up to Teglio. Emma Pooley (Lotto-Belisol) was the first rider to crest the climb, subsequently taking the the mountains classification jersey from Orica-AIS’s Valentina Scandolara.

Following the climb, the peloton split in half, with a breakaway group of  seven riders containing Jessie Daams (Boels-Dolmans), Scandolara, Annemiek van Vleuten, Tayler Wiles (Specialized-Lululemon), Linda Villumsen (Wiggle Honda), Tatiana Antoshina (Rusvelo) and Katrin Garfoot (Orica-AIS), managing to ride clear for most of the day.

However, with 16 kilometers remaining, the escapees were caught, mostly under the fierce determination of Shelley Olds and her Alé-Cipollini team.

The final 800 meters involved an uphill drag, with Vos setting a vigorous pace that served to hold off her rivals to the finish.

Vos continues to lead the overall classification by 54 seconds over her  teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, while Elisa Longo Borghini sits in third at 1:03 behind Vos.

Meanwhile, last year’s winner, Mara Abbott, remains in sixth place at 3:08 back.

The Giro Rosa continues tomorrow, with a 90.3 kilometer stage from Verbania to San Domenico di Varzo, with a 13 kilometer summit finish.
