Fabio Aru claimed stage 15 of this year’s Giro d’Italia in a solo victory today, following 225 kilometers of racing from Valdengo to Montecampione.
Today’s final 5 kilometers saw a battle royal amongst race favorites such as Pierre Rolland (Europcar), Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Aru – with each rider vying for the win with individual attacks and surges of their own.
However, Aru ultimately emerged as the strongest rider in the end, as he crossed the finish line 21 seconds ahead of Fabio Duarte (Colombia), followed by Quintana in second place, with Rolland and Uran finishing in fourth and fifth positions – at 42 seconds behind.
Following today’s stage results, Uran managed to hold onto his maglia rosa, with a 1:03 lead over Evans. Meanwhile, Rafal Majka retained his third spot on the podium as well – at 1:50 back.
