MindRider Helmet: Tells Cyclists They're Stressed

Biking reduces stress. That is, until you hit the pavement and start weaving in and out of traffic, pedaling alongside cars, trucks and a string of crowded buses. City cycling is an unnerving experience — one that’s bound to leave you perpetually paranoid you’ll be pummeled by the poorly-planned opening of a car door.

Arlene Ducao, a recentMIT Media Lab graduate, has felt a similar anxiety biking around New York City. To stay safe, she smartly straps on a helmet. Not just any helmet, however; one that reads minds.

Ducao has been working with Ilias Koen, whom she met at New York City’s School Of Visual Arts. Together, they’ve spent the last decade focused on scientific data visualization, all while tricking out their bike helmets, rather recreationally, with different caps and lights to make it more visible.

Yet, as the duo continued working in this new world of wearable tech, they started thinking about whether or not they could use brainwaves to control electronic components. From that curiosity, MindRider  was born.

MindRider is a helmet that’s undergone several "rounds." The first? Translating the cyclist’s brain state to different colors on the helmet, similar to traffic lighting. Green is equivalent to calm and focus, while yellow represents slight agitation, and red equates to stress and a blinking red light symbolizes panic. The coloring is a way to present bikers’ mental state on the streets, according to Koen, although that’s just one way stress can be used. 

The helmet is also capable of developing "Experience Maps" of cyclists’ geo-located brain activity. With these maps, MindRider is able to analyze relationships between the user and the environment, and assist other riders in charting a safer course.

"The data access of MindRider has evolved into something more useful for them," said Ducao of the startup’s initial cyclists. "They could look up a map of all the users and all of the brain states and use that to plan their route."

Knowing where you get stressed and others get stressed isn’t just helpful personally, however. The feature can also aid municipal government organizations looking to more effectively plan out bike lanes in their city. All data is customized to a user’s privacy settings, yet MindRider encourages cyclists to "add to street maps that show community’s experience" and "share them with friends, other cyclists, even transportation planners."

Through the various iterations of the helmet, the actual helmet has stayed the same, according to Ducao, who explained the biggest evolution has been on the software and data side. Now, cyclists can see their brainwaves visualized.

"When we added a GPS and data logging functionality to the helmet, that turned the helmet much more into a civic project," Ducao added. "One area of interest is bikeshare. Where should bikeshare places be? We can plan out bike lanes."

When the weather warms up, the team plans on producing a larger fleet of helmets they can start holding public meetups with. Although the testing will be based in Brooklyn, MindRider is a part of the MIT Media Lab’s new fund for student startups,  called E14, meaning the innovative headgear could, hopefully, be spotted in Boston someday. If nothing else, Ducao said they do plan on launching a crowdfunding campaign later this year after all the initial testing.

To get to that commercially viable state, Ducao and Koen have been working with a fashion designer from Theory to create a helmet that’s not just tech-savvy, but sleek. The duo has been trying to incorporate new digital fabrication techniques into making the helmet, such as 3D printing, as well as integrating ceramics and knitwear sewing techniques.

Although a wearable tech concept akin to Jawbone’s UP –  which Ducao also regularly straps on — Ducao acknowledged MindRider "is definitely not a medical device," as the electronics they’re using "are already available in toys and other gadgets."

For more experienced bikers, however, the helmet could actually bring them less stress while pedaling.

"Experienced cyclists know their streets and understand their streets," Ducao said. "They’re really interested in how to use MindReader for stress relief and meditation."

So, perhaps bicycling reduces stress after all.

Round ONE: 

MindRider + LIGHTS

I ride my bike almost daily, but when I moved to NYC years ago, cycling in such a dense urban environment intimidated me. It took a long time to adjust. By then, I took to tricking out my helmet with different caps and lights to keep my gear cleaner and safer. This led to helmet experiments with circuitry and interactivity. When I came to MIT, I was curious to add some of the new commercial EEG (electroencephalography) devices to the mix.

MindRider v.1 translates the cyclist’s brain state to helmet light colors, like in traffic lighting:

  • green = calm/focus
  • yellow = slight agitation
  • red = stress
  • blinking red = panic

Round TWO: 

MindRider + GPS

MindRider v.2 is busting out onto the streets! Sandra Richter, one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People of 2013, asked our team to develop a MindRider+GPS pair to log brain activity in time and space. This pair of MindRiders is being used for her study Social Cycling: Quantifying the Level of Perceived Safety when Biking in Pairs. We are excited to develop “Experience Maps” of cyclists’ geo-located brain activity. These maps can reveal previously unobserved relationships between the cyclist and the environment, and they have all kinds of applications for personal fitness, urban planning, safety analysis, and more.
