Serious Cycling Malibu Gran Fondo 2015

Want exclusivity and first-class accommodations, aside from a roaring mass that’s typically associated with a Gran Fondo event ? Check out Serious Cycling’s 2nd Gran Fondo Malibu – scheduled for next February.

Any Gran Fondo with a list of sponsors like this, is sure to be an event not worth missing. Dig!

Press Release,

Dear Cyclists,

Join us and ride our world-class event held in the beautiful and iconic city of Malibu, in Southern California. Space is very limited. We are only accepting 250 athletes to this exclusive weekend designed to give participants a complete Gran Fondo experience.

The format of our weekend is the first of its kind. Our two-day event traverses a balanced mix of rolling terrain and an epic climb.  Participants will have the opportunity to ride in an Omnium format where two days’ rides are for cumulative time, or they may ride either Saturday or Sunday individually as a single day’s event. This weekend is designed to attract cyclists from around the world showcasing our beautiful landscape and is well timed to take advantage of Southern California’s consistently good weather compared to early spring in much colder parts of the world.

We are working with many local businesses to showcase the cycling lifestyle of Southern California.  The weekend begins with a 151km mass start event on Saturday with the start and finish at the scenic Calamigos Ranch, nestled deep in the Santa Monica Mountains.  A light post-ride reception, including local craft beers and wines will be held on this beautiful property.  That evening all participants and their travelling families are invited to a wine and cheese reception at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village to prepare for the following day’s Race of Truth.  Sunday’s 20km time trial will head due north on the world-famous Pacific Coast Highway, leaving the newly remodeled Trancas Country Market.  A family picnic on the grassy lawn of Trancas Country Market will reveal the riders’ accomplishments rounding out the afternoon.  Throughout both Saturday and Sunday activities at the ride starts are available to introduce the sport of cycling to anyone young at heart but not otherwise participating in the days’ rides.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Yield to Life Foundation.

Ride!

GRAN FONDO ROUTE

DAY ONE

The first day’s 151km route captures the excitement of a Grand Tour stage with its rolling terrain on PCH, mountain climb up Latigo Canyon and country roads through Somis.

Starting at Calamigos Ranch high up in the Santa Monica mountains riders will descend to the Pacific Ocean via Encinal Canyon Road. Heading north on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) riders will soak up the sun with the ocean to their left and mountains to their right. Reaching the end of the mountain range riders will head north through lush farm fields entering the orchards and rolling hills of Somis.  A loop around the area via Bradley and Balcom Canyon Roads will be sure to open up the legs.

Now heading south back to PCH the ocean air and blue water prepares the lungs for an epic finish. As the terrain begins to roll, the first big effort comes as riders climb away from Zuma Beach.  12km later the approach to Latigo Canyon Road begins. Riders will turn left and ascend Latigo (14km, 4% average, 7-9% pitches) back towards Calamigos Ranch where the finish line awaits.

DAY ONE’s route has a mixed terrian that will favor different riding styles throughout the kilometers.

DAY TWO

20km Race of Truth, point to point, heading north on PCH.

The TT course will have been previewed by the riders in the previous stage. Savy technician will spot landmarks along the way to help dose their efforts.

Start times will be posted at the Saturday evening party at the Four Seasons in Westlake. Riders participaing in the Time Trial will start first, the GranFondo riders will then start in reverse order from their finish time from the previous day, non-aero then aero category riders (slowest ride starts first, fastest rider starts last, on 30 second intervals).
