Aerobag Brings Next-Generation Crash Protection to Pro Cycling

Aerobag is bringing next-generation crash protection to pro cycling without compromising performance, courtesy of an ultralight, compact airbag system that can be incorporated into the straps of a pair of bib shorts.

How it Works

Aerobag’s system features almost invisible integrated bib straps that rely on nine sensors that continuously scan and monitor the rider’s body at 200 Hz in order to detect crash anomalies. When triggered, Aerobag deploys in 100 milliseconds and folds back to minimize bulk, allowing the rider continue the race if possible.

What it protects

Aerobag helps protect the rider’s most vulnerable zones in severe crashes:

  • Neck
  • Spine / back
  • Chest (frontal impact)
  • These are the areas most associated with high-consequence injuries.

Does Aerobag affect aerodynamics or weight?

No. Aerobag is designed to be lightweight (+/- 500gr)  and low-bulk, with no measurable impact on aerodynamics and minimal effect on thermal regulation.

Is Aerobag compatible with existing team kits?

Yes. Aerobag is developed as a plug-in system and can be integrated into existing apparel designs in collaboration with clothing sponsors.

Can Aerobag be washed?

The garment is designed to be washable following specific care instructions. Electronic components and the cartridge must be removed prior to washing.

How many times can Aerobag be used?

Aerobag can easily be reused and is designed for a single deployment per CO2-ignitor (cartridge). After activation, the cartridge needs to be replaced. The textile system itself is designed to recover its shape after impact.

According to Aerobag, the company is working with several apparel brands, such as Nalini, to integrate its system directly into their range of bib shorts. As for us cycling mortals, Aerobag says it has plans to make its technology available for the cycling masses.
