Matteo Malucelli (XDS-Astana) overhauled Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) during the closing meters to claim stage 4 of the AlUla Tour in Shalal Sijyat Rocks today.
Meanwhile, Yannis Voisard (Tudor Pro Cycling) finished safely in the peloton to retain the overall race lead, followed by Alfonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) and Sergio Higuita (Sergio XDS Astana Team), who sit just seconds adrift.
Earlier, a 16-rider breakaway group formed quickly along the largely flat 173-kilometer stage, later building up a modest advantage of around two minutes over the peloton.
However, the break was eventually reeled in with 56 kilometers to go, with Tudor Cycling controlling the pace.
Terengganu Cycling Team’s Zeb Kyffin later attacked off the front to claim the maximum sprint points, subsequently opening up a slight gap of around 30 seconds for himself before being reined in during the final 5 kilometers.
Following a surprise acceleration by Pascal Ackermann (Jayco AlUla), Milan was forced to come around the German rider, with Malucelli latching onto his wheel.
Milan was unable to sustain his turn of speed, with Malucelli surging past the Italian rider to seize the stage honors.
