On November 25, the epic rivalry between Froome and Contador had its last dance on the virtual roads of the BKOOL cycling simulator.
The legendary duo took part in a stage of the Virtual Giro d’Italia for the first time, accompanied by an international peloton of hundreds of fans who were able to cheer them on from the comfort of their own living rooms.
During the warm-up minutes before the stage, Froome and Contador exchanged impressions and a few anecdotes from the past via a joint Instagram live. Then, in the opening kilometers of the stage, Contador showed himself to be particularly motivated, riding in the lead group from the start, leading the peloton for several kilometers and jumping into the breakaway to make sure it made it to the line.
Froome, for his part, seemed to be taking it easy: “Alberto seems particularly motivated today. I had to train for four hours this morning, so I prefer to let my legs go a bit while I chat with you,’ the British champion commented on his Instagram feed. Chris Froome is in the midst of preparing for his final season as a professional cyclist with the Israel Premier Tech team.
Contador went all the way, showing that he is still in top form years after his retirement. The BKOOL platform allowed him to track his training data in real-time and the figures speak for themselves: he finished with an average power of 327W, with peaks of over 600W and an average speed of 42km/h, figures of a very well-prepared cyclist.
Throughout the group ride, Alberto continued to share his motivation with his supporters: “We’re in the Giro d’Italia with BKOOL, we’re in the lead group. 360W, 380W, 400W, 420W… Not bad for our age, is it? I’m going to accelerate to catch the wheel of the first one!
Beyond the result, the best thing was to see hundreds of cyclists of different nationalities sharing miles with those who have been their idols for so many years. In the words of Ángel Luis Fernández, BKOOL’s Marketing Director: “Having Froome and Contador riding together on BKOOL, chatting live with each other and sharing their training with our users is a dream come true. This is the culmination of many years of hard work. A historic milestone for virtual cycling.
And it doesn’t stop there. Giro, Tour and Vuelta champions Alberto Contador and Chris Froome will be followed by Olympic and World Champion Remco Evenepoel, who will ride alongside BKOOL users in just two weeks’ time.
