Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) claimed the opening stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné today, beating Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) in a thrilling sprint finale in Chambon-sur-Lac, after the peloton reeled in the final rider of the break, Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), just meters before the finish.

Race Highlights

Herregodts got away with four others during the opening kilometers of the stage.

In the meantime, Soudal Quick-Step and Jumbo-Visma set a savage pace in the peloton, with the tempo dropping pure sprinters like Dylan Groenewegen (Jayo-AlUla) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe).

As a result, all of the escapees but Herregodts were reined in with around 10 kilometers to go, while Jumbo-Visma continued setting a fierce pace at the front.

Meanwhile, a defiant Herregodts succeeded in maintaining a slim gap along the final descent, appearing as though the German rider might stay away.

But, it wasn’t to be, as more and more teams added to the chase, ultimately bringing the curtains down on Herregodts just before the finish.
