Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale) claimed stage 3 of this year’s Giro del Trentino today, after a well-timed attack on the final climb of the Fierozzo Val Dei Mocheni, that gave the Italian rider the victory ahead of Mikel Landa (Astana) and Richie Porte (Sky).
Race Highlights
Rodolfo Torres (IAM Cycling), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) and Diego Rosa (Astana) led for most of today’s stage, with the trio cresting the climb of Passo Redebus with a one minute advantage over the peloton – during the final 20 kilometers.
However, as the escapees made their way up the final climb of the day, they were slowly reeled in by the Team Sky led peloton.
From there, Pozzovivo tried his luck with a daring attack during the closing 2 kilometers.
However, despite creating a sizable gap of 1:43 over the chase, the Italian rider posed little threat to the the overall classification, so therefore the peloton was resigned to letting Pozzovivo claim the stage victory.
Meanwhile, Porte finished third on the same time as second place finisher, Mikel Landa (Astana), thus hanging onto the overall race lead.
Despite losing some ground today, Porte’s teammate, Leopold König, managed to hold onto third position in the GC, albeit at almost a minute back.
