Mikel Landa (Team Sky) claimed today’s stage 2 of the Giro del Trentino, after winning a summit finish ahead of Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom-Rusvelo) and Damiano Cunego (Nippo-Vini Fantini) in Anras, Austria.
Landa attacked during the final 3 kilometers, with rivals such as Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) opting not to challenge him.
Meanwhile, Firsanov put in a valiant effort to try and chase down Landa during the final steep sections of the climb, but the Sky rider managed to stay out front and seize the stage honors by 4 seconds over his rival.
Damiano Cunego crossed the finish a further 9 seconds later, to claim the final spot on the podium.
Jakob Fuglesang did his best to defend Astana’s interests, but the Danish rider ended up finishing 14 seconds down on the winner, ultimately relinquishing his team’s hold on the leader’s jersey to Landa.
