Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) claimed stage 13 of this year’s Giro d’Italia today, after out sprinting Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory) and Elia Viviani (Sky) on another day of racing in the wet in Jesolo.
Meanwhile, a massive crash plagued the peloton during the final 3 kilometers, claiming Albert Contador as one of its victims.
As a result, Fabio Aru (Astana) was able to takeover the race lead from the Spanish rider, who lost 40 seconds during the chaos – and now sits 19 seconds behind the Italian rider.
In the meantime, Richie Porte’s (Team Sky) string of bad luck continued as well, as the crash cost him two minutes in lost time.
Race Details
A small group of riders consisting of Rick Zabel (BMC), Jerome Pineau (IAM Cycling) and Marco Frapporti (Androni Giacattoli), managed to break clear from the main field early on in today’s stage. But, despite being out front for most of the race, the trio never truly escaped the clutches of the peloton.
Indeed, they were eventually caught during the final 17 kilometers.
