Remo Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) stormed to victory in today’s opening time trial of the Giro d’Italia, covering the 19.3-kilometer course from Fossacesia Marina to Ortona with the fastest time of 21:18, finishing 22 seconds ahead of Filippo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers) to don the race’s first maglia rosa.
Meanwhile, Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) clocked the third-fastest time to secure the final spot on the podium.
Elsewhere, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) – widely recognized as a joint favorite alongside Evenepoel – finished a disappointing 43 seconds down on his Belgian rival.
Race Highlights
Stefan de Bod set an early benchmark for his EF Education-EasyPost team, stopping the clock at 00:22:32 with an average speed of 52.189 km/h.
De Bod’s time was later eclipsed by Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo). But, the Dane in turn was bested by UAE Team Emirates’ Brandon McNulty, whose time in the hot seat was quickly dethroned by his teammate Jay Vine, who finished two seconds faster than the American rider.
Ineos-Grenadiers’ Tao Geoghegan Hart was the next rider to set the fastest time, nixing Vine by 6 seconds.
From there, Almeida took over the leaderboard, delivering an impressive performance that bettered Geoghegan Hart’s time by 11 seconds.
In the meantime, Geraint Thomas (Ineos-Grenadiers) set the fastest times at the intermediate points, but the British rider lost valuable ground on the climb to finish in fifth place.
