Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) won stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia today, after the Italian rider held-off compatriot Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) and Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) in a thrilling finish in Caorle.
In a week dominated by mountain stages, today was a day for the sprinters as they covered 197 kilometers from Pergine Valsugana to the coastal finishing town above Venice.
Meanwhile, Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) finished safely in the peloton to carry the pink jersey into the weekend.
An early breakaway group containing Senne Leysen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Diego Pablo Sevilla (EOLO-Kometa) and Charlie Quarterman (Team Corratec – Selle Italia) went on to establish a maximum advantage of around two minutes.
Leysen was the last of the escapees to be reined in with 5 kilometers to go, setting the stage for an inevitable sprint finale.
From there, the GC leaders were all safely guided through the final technical 3 kilometers, with Matthews being the first rider to open up his sprint during the closing meters.
But, a photo finish would award Dainese and Milan the top spots on the podium.
