Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) claimed stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia today, emerging from Kaden Groves’s (Alpecin-Deceuninck) slipstream during the closing 100 meters to snatch the victory.
Race Highlights
Paul Lapeira (AG2R-Citroen), Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Mattia Bais (Eolo-Kometa) and Team Corratec-Selle Italia’s Stefano Gandin formed the day’s first breakaway effort, with Arkea-Samsic’s Alessandro Verre later bridging his way to the trio.
From there, the escapees went on to establish an advantage of almost six minutes over the peloton.
With 108 kilometers left, Verre was the first to get reined in, while Soudal-Quickstep, Team DSM, Trek-Segafredo and Team Movistar lead the chase effort.
The remaining breakaway group was eventually caught with 34 kilometers to go, as the stage was building up for an inevitable sprint finale.
However, with 3 kilometers left, chaos struck the peloton, taking down a number of riders who failed to hold their lines, most notably Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan).
Meanwhile, the hectic run-in to the finish saw the bunch split in two, leaving only a small portion peloton still intact, with Groves, Milan and David Dekker (Team Arkéa-Samsic) coming to the fore in a battle for the stage honors.
