Honda Teases with Prototype Electric Mountain Bike

Honda is the latest car company to consider entering the eBike market, teasing onlookers at the recent Japanese Mobility Show with a full-suspension MTB that was more reminiscent of an old trials bike than a modern-day pedelec.

“The Honda e-MTB Concept expands the field of mobility in nature,” read a statement from Honda accompanying its exhibition in Japan. “Easily going uphill with electric assistance, this bike offers a new riding experience that combines the FUN of motorcycles and FUN of a mountain bike. It is being developed to enable anyone to enjoy riding mountainous trails more freely.

Indeed, Honda’s expertise in the motorcycle segment is evident in this latest prototype, which features a thin-wall aluminum frame coupled with a massive swingarm, design queues that are taken right out of the pages of company’s off-road motorcycles.

“The unique frame design expresses a fusion of functionality and styling,” says Honda.

The bike on display was equipped with a SRAM Eagle AXS drivetrain and disc brakes, spinning on a set of DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels shod with Maxxis Minion DHF tires, while the front and rear suspension comes courtesy of Fox components. The bike was also fitted with a RockShox Reverb AXS dropper post.

Elsewhere, the bike appeared to come with a portable battery charger, which could be an interesting add-on accessory should the concept come to fruition.
