Rohan Dennis has been charged in the death of his wife, former world champion Melissa Hoskins, who died from injuries she sustained after being struck by a vehicle that was driven by Dennis.
Dennis, 33, is alleged to have hit Hoskins, 32, with his vehicle. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died overnight.
The fatal collision occurred at around 8pm in Medindie, a suburb of Adelaide in their native Australia.
Dennis was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life. He was released on bail, and scheduled to appear at Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.
Prior to being married in 2018, Dennis and Hoskins both represented their country at the London 2012 Olympics. Dennis won a silver medal in the team pursuit.
His future wife and mother of their two children missed out on a medal in the same event by just 0.18 seconds. She did, however, go on to win at the 2015 World Championship, breaking the world record with her team before retiring two years later.
Meanwhile, Dennis was awarded the Sir Hubert Opperman medal and trophy, recognizing Australia’s best all-round cyclist. He also won back-to-back UCI men’s individual time trial world championships in 2018 and 2019, as well as an Olympic bronze to his collection at Tokyo 2020, making the podium in the men’s individual time trial before calling time on his career earlier this year.
South Australia police told local media that she suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment but died overnight.
Police officers and detectives attended the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, with local television reports showing them studying a large pick-up truck.
