Capitalizing on the success of the women’s Tour de France and La Course race, race organizers for Spain’s Grand Tour equivalent, the Vuelta a Espana, decided to launch a similar race called the La Madrid Challenge by la Vuelta last season.
Given the resounding success of last year’s inaugural event, the La Madrid Challenge returns for its second edition, which will take place before the final stage of the men’s race on September 11.
The teams that will participate in the will include fourteen of the ‘Women’s WorldTour’ teams, along with a few Spanish Continental teams.

However, conspicuously absent from the list, are Canyon-SRAM, Cervélo-Bigla and Rabo-Liv, who have chosen to skip the La Madrid Challenge.
In addition, the American teams United Healthcare and Team TIBCO won’t be participating either, nor will Astana’s women’s squad.
