Kévin Vauquelin gave France back-to-back victories in this year’s Tour de France, after the Frenchman claimed stage 2 in Bologna following an attack that saw the Arkéa-B&B Hotels’ rider jettisoned his fellow escapees along the San Luca climb with 14km to go.
Indeed, Vauquelin powered away from Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), proving the strongest on the challenging 1.9km climb that averaged over a 10% gradient.
In the meantime, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) commenced an explosive attack along the ascent, forcing Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) to respond, while other GC hopefuls such as Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) saw themselves distanced.
