Fernando Gaviri (Movistar Team) claimed the final stage of the Tour de Romandie today, after the Colombian beat out Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious) and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) with a long-range sprint to the finish.

With 300 meters to go, Gaviria led the way around the final bend, surging clear of Milan Menten (Lotto-Dstny), while Arndt also passed Menten on the right, followed Hayter who came around the German on the left to snatch the final spot on the podium.

Meanwhile, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) finished safely in the peloton back in 25th place to seal the overall victory.

The British rider, whose victory was built with a solo triumph atop Thyon 2000 on Saturday, finished the week 19 seconds clear of Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), while Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) rounded out the podium at 27 seconds.

“First of all, I want to say a big thanks to the guys,” Yates said after the stage. “We controlled the race perfectly today. I didn’t really do much so it’s thanks to them that we won this race.

“It’s been a perfect week for us. We have two stage wins and the overall so we can’t ask for much more.”

Race Highlights

Thomas Gloag (Jumbo-Visma), Paul Lapeira (AG2R-Citroën), Robert Stannard (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Antoine Aebi (Switzerland) and Alexander Kamp (Tudor) marked the day’s first breakaway effort, with the quintet later opening up an advantage of around five minutes over the peloton.

However, the escapees were eventually reined in with just over 30 kilometers, a high-paced chase effort that initially saw several riders, including Gaviria, get dropped before making their way back before the final climb.

Shortly thereafter, a  second breakaway got up the road with three riders, but they were eventually reeled in,  with Movistar and Ineos Grenadiers both working hard on the front to bring it home for a sprint.

Gaviria was at the front of the bunch as it approached the last corner, accelerating from the final bend with a turn of speed that held off any challengers.
