Tao Geoghegan-Hart stormed to victory in stage 1 of the Tour of the Alps today, after the Ineos-Grenadiers rider executed a blistering uphill attack during the closing meters, beating Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën) to claim his second win of the season
After the peloton had swept up the last of the day’s breakaway group, Carthy launched a searing attack, a move that was quickly followed with a counter-attack from Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën). However, a finely-calculated move during the waning meters by Geoghegan-Hart, saw the British rider snatch the stage honors.
Race Highlights
Sergio Samitier, Alex Martín, Andrea Garosio, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Moean Vermeulen and Mulu Kinfe Hailemichael marked the day’s first breakaway effort, jettisoning the peloton early-on in today’s 127.5 kilometer stage from Rattenberg to Alpbach.
After lingering out for for most of the day, the escapees were eventually reined-in with 17 kilometers to go, inspiring a series of attacks from the likes of Haig and Jefferson Cepeda along the steeper slopes.
Haig later dropped Cepeda on the final ascent, while increasing his gap over the peloton to 25-seconds. However, the Australian rider was ultimately reeled-in during the last kilometers, with Carthy being the first to attack.
The British rider’s attack initially seemed decisive, but fellow Briton Geoghegan-Hart responded with a counter-move that proved unassailable.
