Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) attacked out of a lead group of riders during the final 3 kilometers, to claim stage 5 of this year’s Volta a Catalunya today – finishing 5 seconds ahead of Rigoberto Uran (Etixx – Quick-Step) and third-place finisher – Paolo Tiralongo (Astana).
Meanwhile Ritchie Porte, who had started the day second place overall, followed in fourth place, which moved the Sky rider to the top of the general classification, after former leader Bart de Clerq (Lotto Soudal) was dropped earlier in the day when the peloton split due to heavy crosswinds.
Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r-La Mondiale) is now second overall, five seconds down, while Alberto Contador is two seconds further back in third.
Chris Froome (Team Sky) endured another difficult day as he continues to recover from illness, finishing more than eight minutes behind Valverde.
