Pablo Castrillo (Equipo Kern Pharma) triumphed in stage 12 of the Vuelta a España today, after the Spanish rider jettisoned the breakaway group along the final 8km punishing summit to claim an impressive victory.
Meanwhile, Ben O’Connor and his Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale teammates, marshaled the bunch smartly as the Australian earned another day in red.

Today’s terrain inspired the early attackers, with a group of 10 riders containing Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Jhonatan Narvaez, Oscar Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), Mauri Vansevenant (T-Rex Quick-Step), Carlos Verona (Lidl-Trek), Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla), Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty), Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL), Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) and Pablo Castrillo (Kern Pharma) going clear during the first hour of racing
In the meantime, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale drove the bunch, while the breakaway’s gap rose to 10’12’’ at km 86.
With 14km to go, Soler attacked, prompting a counter-attack from Verona counter-attacks, but neither stuck.
From there, Castrillo commenced his winning move with 10km to go, with the GC contenders finishing 6’30’’ behind the winner.
