Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) claimed stage 4 of the Vuelta a España today, prevailing atop the Pico Villuercas after narrowly out-pacing Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) who celebrated too soon and lost the sprint, while defending champion Sepp Kuss conceded valuable time to his former Slovenian teammate.
Meanwhile, overnight leader Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) came home over 10 minutes down and his American teammate Kuss, who crossed the line 28 seconds adrift Roglič.
Roglič now leads Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) by eight seconds in the new-look standings, with Enric Mas (Movistar) in third at 32 seconds. Both Almeida and Mas were part of a select seven-man group that contested the win on the first summit finish of the 79th edition of the race.
In the meantime, Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) fought back on during the final kilometer before launching the final sprint – only for Van Eetvelt to react the fastest with what looked to be a decisive kick to the line.
But, the Belgian rider didn’t count on Roglič’s final surge, Van Eetvelt raising his arm to celebrate what would have been the biggest win of his career before almost instantly realizing his folly as his rival came round the outside to snatch the victory.
