Rui Costa (Team UAE Abu Dhabi) claimed stage 5 of the Vuelta a San Juan yesterday, after riding clear of his closest rival Rodolfo Torres (Andiron Giocattoli) following a tense battle atop the Alto de Colorado to claim the race’s Queen Stage.
Meanwhile, Ricardo Escuela (Agrupacion Virgen de Fatima) succeeded in passing Oscar Sevilla (Medellin-Inder) to seize third spot on the podium.
A solid 5th place finish by Bauke Mollema served to move the Trek-Segafredo rider into the overall race lead – 14 seconds ahead of Sevilla with Torres two seconds further behind in third.
As expected, yesterday’s Queen Stage would see a change in the overall classification, with the climb of the Alto de Colorado resulting in time gaps between nearly every top finisher.
