2014 La Flèche Wallonne Féminine

Pauline Ferrand Prevot emerged as today’s winner in the women’s 2014 La Flèche Wallonne World Cup in Belgium today.

The French rider crossed the finish line over the Mur de Huy with a slight one-second advantage over second place finisher Lizzie Armitstead, followed by Elisa Longo Borghini in third spot.

The race finished with a painful climb of the Mur de Huy, a 1.3-kilometer ascent that averages more than 9 percent. Its steepest section is 26 percent.

“I had legs of fire during the first pass through the wall,” Ferrand Prevot told the media. .

“As Marianne felt a little worse, we decided to play my card in the final. I thank her very much because she did a lot of work to put me in an ideal position. What happens to me is awesome.”

The American rider, Evelyn Stevens, who won the 2012 edition, finished seven seconds back in fourth.

It was me, Lizzie and Pauline battling each other,” Stevens said of the final climb. “I was probably a little too quick to go, and then Elisa Longo passed me right at the end.”

Stevens also commented on the steep pitches of the Mur de Huy.

“You think about your legs burning, and then just stab the knife six more times,” she said. “When you win it, it feels pretty good. When you don’t, it feels awful.”

Meanwhile, Armtitstead maintained her lead in the overall World Cup standings. Heading into the race, she had 320 points ahead of Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) in second with 240 points while Anna Van de Breggen was in third place with 220 points.
