Early last summer we posted an article about a new GPS computer that was rumored to be forthcoming from Garmin called – the Edge Touring. Well, as of the couple of weeks ago, the new computer finally launched, and it’s available in two versions – the Touring and Touring Plus.
Both computers are based the Edge 810, along with a host of similar features, to include a waterproof housing with a 3.6 x 5.5cm display, a 160 x 240 pixel resolution touchscreen, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a claimed runtime of up to 17 hours, almost identical buttons and mount system. However, unlike the 810 which is black, the Touring models are both white. So, what make them different ? For the most part, the Edge Touring does not have the "training" functionality that the 810 does.
Although the Edge Touring has will he ability to measure several aspects of a person’s "ride", it does not however, display cadence or map power. Nor does it allow for setting up interval training sessions or racing against a virtual opponent.
Indeed, the Edge Touring concentrates more on navigation, with the ability to add maps via microSD data cards.
Additionally, there are three different modes to choose between: cycling, tour cycling, and mountain biking. As suggested, the mapping includes unpaved roads, paths and trails so it will come up with off-road routes too, if you want them.
One other interesting navigational feature is the RoundTrip routing. If for example, a person wants to set-up a ride according to availability of time, the Edge Touring can suggest as many as three suggested routes with the same start/finish point, along with a route elevation profile for each. In addition, the Edge Touring includes points of interest specifically for cyclists: sights to see, places to eat and stay.

Get the height advantage
The Barometric Altimeter in the Edge Touring Plus gives elevation, total ascent, total descent and gradient information on the go. It also displays a graph of the elevation changes and records the elevation data for upload when you get home.
Connect to Your Edge
Use Edge Touring Plus with a wireless ANT+™ heart rate monitor (sold separately) to help you track and log how hard you’re working. This ANT+ technology also provides integration for compatible LEVs and eBikes to show range, remaining charge and other key data.
